Brits Rising against Mangal

London: The Rising — Ballad of Mangal Pandey, now showing in cinema chains in Britain, has come in for trenchant criticism here for purportedly distorting historical facts concerning British rule in India.

The film, starring Aamir Khan and billed as an “epic tale of friendship, betrayal, love and sacrifice”, is directed by Ketan Mehta, and is said to have been partly made from money from the British lottery.

A London newspaper has alleged that the UK Film Council gave £150,000 towards financing the £6.6 million blockbuster, ostensibly the most expensive film made in India.

The UK film council aims to “stimulate a competitive and successful British film industry”.
