Varma’s Magnum Opus Sholay is the talk of the town

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Of late, most of his characters in the tinsel world were almost superhuman. Yet, he is thrilled to don the role of a former super cop who got his hands amputated by a criminal and is now at the fag end of his life.
No wonder, superstar Mohan Lal has grabbed the offer as the role in the offing is nothing less than the reincarnation of Thakur Baldev Singh, played by Sanjeev Kumar in the legendary film Sholay, and the director who invited Lal is none other than Ram Gopal Varma.
Incidentally, Mohan Lal had made his debut in Hindi film world in Varma’s film Company in which he played the role of a super cop. The character of Thakur Baldev Singh has contributed much to the huge success of Sippy’s Sholay , which was screened continuously for five years at the Minerva Theatre in Mumbai.
Sholay, a Ramesh Sippy film released in 1975, became a trend-setter in Hindi filmdom. The BBC recently described Sholay as the best Bollywood film ever made.
